Frequently Asked Questions

What is it?

webwordcount is a free online tool aimed at professional translators and proof readers who have a need to translate or proof read websites. Professional translators charge per word and it can be difficult to estimate the amount of words that are on a particular website. For that reason, webwordcount counts all the words on a given website for you, allowing you to give a better price estimation to your clients.

How do I use it?

Simple. Type in the website address you would like to count in the input box on the main page, you will then be redirected to a new page where your results will be displayed. You can then use your unique count id at anytime to come back and view your results or show them to someone else.

How does it work?

It currently works by spidering a website by following its hyperlinks. While it does this it removes all source code (HTML, JavaScript, CSS) and then saves just the words it finds on those pages to our database. We only count web pages, we ignore all documents which are linked from webpages and all other types of files which make up the webapge itself such as JavaScript and images.

What do you class as a 'word'?

A word to us is any sequence of alpha numeric characters seperated by a space which may include an apostrophe (') and/or a hyphen (-) but not start with one.
